Alzheimer’s Disease International partners with Dutch-Italian entrepreneur Filippo Chisari to announce the Opaleo NFT project to raise funds to help patients with Alzheimer’s. The NFT collection will be released in September for World Alzheimer’s Month.
What is Alzheimer’s disease?
Alzheimer’s disease is a neurologic disorder in which the brain shrinks and brain cells die during a progressive age. This disease eventually leads to dementia; a sudden decline in memory, thinking, and social skills affecting the daily life of an individual.
Alzheimer’s is a hereditary disease that continues for generation after generation affecting thousands of families.
In many countries, there is still a lack of awareness and funds to fight against this disease. The patients are usually admitted to hospitals or special-care institutions that cost a lot and not everyone can afford them.
The Opaleo NFT project
The Opaleo NFT project by Alzheimer’s Disease International in partnership with Dutch-Italian entrepreneur Filippo Chisari to showcase his grandpa Leo’s fight against Alzheimer’s.
Leo Van Furth or Grandpa Leo was a Holocaust survivor who loved photography. He traveled to Thailand, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Zambia, the UK, the Netherlands, Italy, Spain, France, and the US for 20 years. With every travel, he captured the moments in the camera from his POV.
The NFT project features 1:1 art photography NFTs taken by Leo during the 1950s, 60s, and 70s. They exist as both digital and physical photos that people can now have intellectual property rights to.
The Opaleo NFT holders will receive NFTs and the original physical photographs as part of the project.
Regarding his partnership with ADI, Filippo says, “Members of my family were and are to this day affected by this illness, slowly taking loved ones away from us. I felt compelled to contribute my part and was lucky to receive the utmost support from the ADI Team.”
There will be 258 NFTs minted on Polygon, a scaling solution platform, and sold at the OpenSea marketplace.
All the proceeds from NFT sales will be donated to Alzheimer’s Disease International to help Alzheimer’s patients.
“We are excited to see the project evolve, to be part of this inventive approach to fundraising, and our huge thanks go to Filippo for his commitment and support of ADI,” says Nikki Bayliss, Head of Development at ADI, in the official press release.
Through this project, Filippo believes he can set an example of how NFTs can be used for the greater good of the community.
