Vitalik Buterin, the chairman and co-founder of Ethereum, announced the network will be adding The Scourge as part of its roadmap, in a recent Twitter post on Nov 5. This upgrade will help enhance censorship and contribute to decentralization.
The great upgrade of this year The Merge was hyped a lot in the Web3 community as the blockchain transitioned from the proof-of-work consensus mechanism to proof-of-stake, making it much more scalable and environment-friendly.
After the successful completion of this stage, Ethereum is now in The Surge process where it aims to achieve 100,000 transactions per second. This second upgrade is Ethereum’s six-stage roadmap, the Merge, the Surge, the Scourge, the Verge, the Purge, and the Splurge.
In the updated diagram shown below, The Scourge will become part of the roadmap for Ethereum to achieve its ideal milestone.
The Scourge will “ensure reliable and credibly neutral transaction inclusion and to avoid centralization and other protocol risks from MEV.” Based on the picture, ETH wants to achieve “transaction inclusion” and also avoid any centralization of the protocol.
The importance of censorship has been constantly highlighted by experts; more virtual to Ethereum than achieving scalability.
Buterin also explained The Verge would enhance the verification on Ethereum by integrating Succinct Non-Interactive Argument of Knowledge (SNARK) technology.
Final words
Ethereum’s recent addition of The Scourge is an important inclusion. The network has faced many issues such as miners manipulating the network in their favor. With the new milestone, ETH will overcome these challenges and also achieve censorship.
More details about The Scourge will be added soon once the blockchain completes the Surge.
