Rektguy NFT recently tweeted a picture of 3 naked performers invited to the project’s party during NFT Paris. The post raised questions about the diversity and inclusivity of women in the Web3 space on Twitter.
NFT Paris
NFT Paris, which promoted inclusion and community with various projects, became a center of the debate over women’s representation. Many videos surfaced on the internet by big projects like Rektguy NFT and DeGods where women were less seen.
Although many women-specific panel discussions did happen and many women were present at different parties, a specific tweet by Rektguy came off as misleading and offensive to women.
An industry that is dominated by the male population seems to be catering to them only. Many women believe the tweet seems to objectify women as showpieces with the caption “We hope you enjoyed the show.”
It is important to understand that diversity comes from respecting gender identities and perspectives. Web3 can only achieve mass adoption if every woman and non-binary person feels they have a place to thrive and feel respected.
Barbara Mahe, the co-founder of NFT Factory Paris, voiced her opinion on the post by saying she would never support a project that
“considers this is what women should be for at a party.” She also highlighted this as a “serious problem in this ecosystem.”
In response to the controversy, OSF, the creator of Rektguy, tweeted that he’s proud to have a women’s community along with transgenders and gender-neutral performers at the event.
Some women supporters defended Rug Radio and Rektguy, saying the party was highly inclusive and helped them connect with other women.
However, many women took issue with the Twitter post, which could be associated with the NFT project’s brand. They claim that publicizing pictures of naked women undermines the claim of inclusivity.
Nonetheless, this controversy opens up another debate about women’s representation in Web3. As many women-led projects struggle to bring people on board or join male-dominated communities, it is vital to establish respectful boundaries, especially in IRL events and parties.
