PUBG x BLACKPINK

wins Best Metaverse Performance award at VMAs

Kpop girl group BLACKPINK takes the moon man for Best Metaverse Performance at the MTV VMAs 2022. This is the first-ever nomination category introduced by Video Music Awards 2022.

Metaverse is becoming the latest trend in the entertainment world. Many artists and musicians have paired up with different virtual platforms to bring fans from worldwide into one place.

This became more common during the pandemic when people were forced to stay at home and practice social distancing. The concerts and tours were canceled causing a loss to the industry.

Since concerts and live performances are the livelihoods of artists, they started shifting online via metaverse and other virtual platforms. In Kpop, Augmented reality became common for award shows.

VMAs for the first time also added metaverse augmented reality to its main show of a Bored Ape sitting on a globe. Also the Eminem x Snoop Dogg first metaverse performance on Otherside.

The globally leading Kpop group BLACKPINK partnered with PUBG for “Black Pink X PUBG Mobile 2022 In-Game Concert [The Virtual]” which was held virtually in the PUBG Battleground.

“It was so much fun doing the project, and I’m so grateful that I got this award,” said Lisa, a member of BLACKPINK, who also won the Best Kpop award at the VMAs.

Other metaverse performances nominated for the award include Rift Tour ft. Ariana Grande on Fortnite, BTS on Minecraft, Charli XCX on Roblox, Justin Bieber on Wave, and Twenty One Pilots on Roblox.

The award was given through fan voting which BLACKPINK won and took the award home, making it the first KPOP group to do so.
